Introduction
The below presentation is a Prezi about digital storytelling. It is a good introduction to the concepts included in digital storytelling. Some of the videos may not work but go on to the next slide as all the information is still present. This Prezi was found on the http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/index.cfm from the University of Houston. There are many examples of digital stories here. The above Prezi takes a minute to load. This Prezi was created by Kristine Pedernal. If it does not work, click here. Kristine has another Prezi called The Complexity of Teaching/Learning Nursing which is also very well presented using Prezi.
What nurse educator stories need to be recorded using the concept of digital storytelling?
There are many different formats that have been taken with this concept. There is already information on this website introducing Animoto, VoiceThread, and narrated PowerPoint but other formats include iMovie, Microsoft's Photo Story, and Camtasia.
Camtasia. This is a dynamic software package that can be downloaded for free for one month as a trial. The cost is under $200. This is the same company that made JING and Snagit. The user can upload previously made mp4 movies, edit them and add introductions, music and callouts. I have used this program for years now and have recorded many mp4 lectures. Sound control, video and the ability to download and upload the files are fairly easy. Learning the editing feature is fairly simple and Techsmith is always willing to help. After making the mp4s, Techsmith has a site where the files can be stored for easy viewing or you can upload it directly into YouTube. Here's one example from a graduate statistics course that is stored on Techsmith's Screencast website: Multiple Regression using Lazstats procedure.
The University of Houston site explains a process to develop a storytelling presentation: http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/page.cfm?id=23&cid=23. This site has quite a few examples of storytelling. One example of telling a story with video and also getting across a message: Newborn baby body language and emotions. A second example is: A personal reflection on the family effects of cardiovascular disease, smoking, and cancer. A third example from the Houston website: History-of-Diabetes-and-Insulin.
Metta is a site that has been in existence for several years. The site is free but you can pay and get advanced features. http://www.metta.io/ An example of a quick story made in less than five minutes is found below. Skip to the end if you like. There is a poll that you can add using this site:

A page of resources of digital storytelling from Educatorstechnology.com from designing a story to examples. Below is one example of how to tell a story. This storytelling approach could be used to describe caring for particular types of patients such as the elderly, cancer patients, or patients that have addiction disorders. Storytelling can add an affective dimension as you teach nurses about caring for patients that can be very inspiring and motivating.
